My Solo Trip to Magical Florida Springs

Crystal clear, bright blue, freshwater springs. I knew they were in Florida and I knew I had to go see them. This is how my first-ever solo trip came to be. If you are a lover of water, wildlife, kayaking, and feeling alive, then this is for you. Here’s my guide on planning the type of trip you’ll remember forever to Weeki Wachee State Park and Rainbow River!

P.S. Read to the end to find out the location of a secret mermaid lair hidden within one of these rivers.

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park

Weeki Wachee Springs is a beautiful State Park at the head of a natural spring that stays around 73 °F all year round!

Kayak Rentals: Rent directly from the State Park! This is one of the only ways to experience some of the most secluded parts of the river. Plus, the amount of kayaks allowed on the river is limited every day, so you will experience a quiet, serene river float without the crowds. Advanced reservation are best.

The ride: You’ll float over flowing underwater grasses, manatees, river otters, fish, and some of the bluest water you’ll ever see for 2.8 miles. Some parts of this winding river are shaded by lush, tropical palms and beautiful trees that reach down towards the flowing currents. But don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, and an overshirt to avoid burning on sunny days! Water and snacks are highly encouraged by me— but there are no disposable food or drink containers allowed on the river. They will check your bags! Bring reusable containers and bottles, they are cool anyways.

Tip: Manatee season is mid November-March, but i’ve heard from an inside source that you can see them all year round! Make sure to look down as your float down the river— the dark spot under your kayak might just be a manatee escaping the cold water of the ocean in these warm springs!

Rainbow River

Take a drive a few hours North of Weeki Wachee, you’ll find the mesmerizing Rainbow River in Dunnellon.

Kayak Rentals: My kayak rental included a shuttle ride up the river to a drop off point called KP Hole. This river float is a bit longer than the Weeki and can last closer to 4 hours— and every minute is worth it!

The Float: Rainbow River is much wider and deeper than the Weeki, and known to be home to some gators too! While I didn’t see any gators, I saw mesmerizing emerald green waters, curious river otters, bird nests full of fuzzy babies, and ancient-looking oak trees. The oak trees stood out to me the most, as they are draped with long tendrils of moss that sway in the wind and make you feel like you’re in Jurassic Park. (in a chill way, not a scary way) Along the river, you’ll see beautiful waterfront homes, wildlife, and an abundance of lush plants. Just like the Weeki, hats, sunscreen, and protective layers are recommended. Water and snacks too- since this river is mostly unshaded!

Tip: Starting in April, this river gets very crowded as tubing season begins. I went in March, and saw more wild animals than people during my float!

Secret Mermaid Lair

You made it to the best part! When I paddled into this unmarked offshoot of the Rainbow River, I seriously felt like I was going to see a mermaid at any second. It was full of magic and made me feel true moments of internal peace. The shallow, sparkling water was lit up by the sun filtering in through the tropical trees and tiny fish swirled all around my kayak in the clear water.

How to find it: This secret spot it located right at the KP Hole launch point, so it’s pretty easy to find! If you launched from KP Hole, paddle upriver for about 5 minutes until you see a large, grassy island in the middle of the river. Keep going until you see a small, white sand beach that leads to an opening in the trees on the right side! (Left side if you are already going down river) Paddle into this opening— you’ll know you’ve found it because the water gets very shallow quickly, with just enough room for the kayak to float. You can keep paddling until you hit a fence in the river with a “Private Property” sign on it.

Once you find this magical spot, stay awhile and enjoy this serene sanctuary from the outside world. I was lucky enough to be the only person in there, and it gave me a huge feeling of appreciation for the natural, untouched world.

I hope this guide helps you plan your trip to Weeki Wachee or Rainbow! As always, remember to never stop exploring, even if you have to go alone. The world is out there, full of experiences that will guide you towards your true path and lead you to happiness and peace.

Happy paddling!

Cleo
